The Road Ahead

If your or a loved one need a driving assessment due to a medical condition, injury or age-related changes, see my step-by-step guide below to help you understand the process.

Step 1.

Get your forms at the ready!
Before booking an assessment, you’ll need a medical referral from your doctor (GP or specialist).

Step 2.

Time to book your OT Driving Assessment.
Once you have medical clearance, contact an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessor (that’s me!) to schedule your appointment.

  • Our team will guide you through the process and discuss any funding options (e.g., Home Care Package (HCP), NDIS, or private payment).

  • We’ll book both the off-road assessment (clinic-based) and on-road assessment (practical driving test).

Step 3.

Let’s chat!
Once your appointment is booked, I’ll come to your home for a personalised, one-on-one consultation lasting 1 to 1.5 hours.

This is your chance to discuss your individual needs, ask questions, and help me assess how you're managing daily tasks, all in the comfort of your own space.

  • Here I’ll review your medical history, vision, cognitive abilities, strength, reaction times, and driving experience.

  • The above info is super important! It helps me determine if you’re ready for the on-road driving assessment.

Step 4.

Let’s hit the road for your Practical Driving Test.
I’ll be right there with you, as your qualified OT Driving Assessor, alongside a driving instructor in a dual-controlled car.

Together, we’ll guide you through the test in a calm and supportive environment, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident as we assess your driving skills.

  • This assessment usually takes around 45 - 60 minutes.

  • You’ll drive in various road conditions, and we assess your ability to safely control the vehicle, make decisions, and follow road rules.

  • If needed, the driving instructor may step in and take control of the car temporarily, just to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the test.

  • Cost for Driving Instructor & Dual-Control Vehicle:
    $150 – $170
(paid separately to the driving instructor).

Step 5.

Outcome & Recommendations.
After the assessment, I’ll provide you with immediate feedback, discussing the results in a clear and supportive way.

We’ll talk through the possible outcomes, any recommendations for your driving, and next steps, so you can feel confident moving forward.

  • ✅ Fit to Drive: You're good to go! You can continue driving as usual with no changes needed.

  • ⚠️ Fit to Drive with Conditions: You may need some adjustments, like vehicle modifications, restricted driving areas (e.g., local only), or a few driving lessons to feel even more confident behind the wheel.

  • 🛑 Not Fit to Drive: If safety concerns are significant, we’ll help guide you through the decision to retire from driving.

Rest assured, we’ll provide support and alternative transport options to keep you moving.

Step 6.

Report Submission to VicRoads.
Once the assessment is complete, I’ll take care of the paperwork for you.

  • I’ll prepare a detailed report and submit it to VicRoads on your behalf.

  • VicRoads will review the information and make the final decision about your driver’s license.

  • You’ll receive a letter from VicRoads with their decision and any next steps, so you’ll know exactly what to do moving forward.
